Valley of the Sun JCC preschool teacher Nir Joels competed in the Ford Ironman Arizona triathlon - a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run - on Nov. 22. JOSH SAYLES a Staff Writer for the Arizona Jewish News in an article that appeared in the Arizona Jewish News on December 4, 2009 writes that:
Ten hours and 24 minutes. That's how long it took Nir Joels, a teacher at the Valley of the Sun JCC preschool and Temple Chai's religious school, to complete the Ford Ironman Arizona triathlon, a 2.4-mile swim followed by a 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run, on Nov. 22. It was Joels' second Ironman Arizona - the 38-year-old Israeli shaved 43 minutes off of his time last year.
A natural athlete, Joels says he gave up a possible career as a professional soccer player in order to become a paratrooper in the Israeli army. "I believed it was more important to serve (my) country," he says.
"People tell me all the time, 'Hey, you were in the special forces. (Ironman) is probably a piece of cake for you,'" says Joels. "It's not. In the army, you need to understand that ... you have no other choice. You do it because you have to. You have to get up early in the morning, you have to sleep less than five hours a night and do all those extreme things. Training for Ironman ... you need to get up in the morning when it's cold, or train when it's extremely hot, all by yourself."
Joels says his ultimate goal for the Ironman is to one day compete in the world championship in Kona, Hawaii.
Locally, he teaches sports at the preschool and talks to his students about the importance of a good diet and exercise.
"I hope that I'm a role model to the young kids and the young people I am meeting all the time," he says.
